Imperial Logistics in Africa takes over 70 percent of Surgipharm

22.02.2017 – Duisburg. Imperial Logistics in Africa is consolidating its position as a marketing partner for the pharmaceutical and consumer goods sector. As part of this strategy, Imperial Logistics is taking over 70 percent of the shares in the Kenyan pharmaceuticals distributor Surgipharm. The price of the deal is about US$ 35 million.

Surgipharm, which has its main offices in Nairobi and Mombasa, is Kenya’s leading distribution company for pharmaceutical and medical products and was founded in 1985. 330 employees generate annual turnover of US$ 70 million. The firm operates storage space measuring 4,700 square metres and has its own fleet of distribution vehicles. Surgipharm operates a large number of sales channels for pharmaceutical products in Kenya. It supplies the Ministry of Health, semi-public organisations, NGOs, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, doctors’ practices and pharmaceutical wholesalers. There will no changes to the managing director or other management positions.

By taking over 70 percent of Surgipharm, Imperial Logistics in Africa is expanding its existing pharmaceutical business in the Imperial Health Science division. Its other operations there include a majority interest in the Nigerian pharmaceutical company Eco Health (53 percent) and the Dutch pharmaceutical wholesaler Imres (70 percent). Imperial Logistics, the logistics division of the South African Imperial Group, consists of the following subdivisions: Imperial Logistics South Africa, Imperial Logistics Rest of Africa and Imperial Logistics International. The annual turnover of the logistics division, Imperial Logistics, is approx. EUR 3 billion. 

Imperial Logistics International 

As a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African company Imperial Holdings Limited, Imperial Logistics International is responsible for coordinating and managing all the international logistics business of Imperial Holdings Limited outside Africa. The varied portfolio of services at Imperial Logistics International, which has its headquarters in Duisburg, is separated into two divisions: the Group pools all its transport services in the Shipping, Road and Express Freight business units in the Imperial Transport Solutions division. The Imperial Supply Chain Solutions division covers all the services in the contract logistics, contract manufacturing and warehousing sectors for the Automotive, Industrial, Retail and Chemicals business units. Working together, both divisions provide a full and transparent range of services from one source along the complete supply chain. Beyond its pure logistics services, Imperial Logistics International has also become established as a process consultant for third parties, a fleet manager for outside car fleets and a provider of insurance services related to particular sectors. Imperial Logistics International employs more than 8,300 people and, including the new acquisition, Palletways, generates turnover amounting to EUR 1.6 billion at 170 business locations.
